Degree Requirements

These requirements apply to students entering this program in fall 2024 and thereafter. Students who enrolled earlier should consult the catalog in effect at the time they enrolled.


This 60-credit M.F.A. program requires the following

as of fall 2024
  • DESN 713 Integrated Design Studio I: Principles 
  • DESN 714 Integrated Design Studio II: Typography 
  • DESN 715 Integrated Design Studio III: Readings and Research
  • DESN 617 Creative Concepts
  • DESN 610 Visual & Verbal Rhetoric
  • DESN 612 Creative Methodologies
  • DESN 791 Practicum in Integrated Design 
  • DESN 793 Proseminar in Integrated Design (MFA candidacy is a requirement for this course. This course is a prerequisite for DESN 797.)
  • DESN 797 Integrated Design Thesis, 6 credits total (MFA candidacy is a requirement for this course.)

Working with an adviser, choose courses that will strengthen your design skills. You can choose from among a variety of Design (DESN) and Interaction Design and Information Architecture (IDIA) courses. You can also choose management courses or illustration, photography, graphic design or production courses offered for graduate credit at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

  • competency in print, video and electronic design, as demonstrated by a portfolio evaluation and an oral examination of the portfolio
  • completion of all coursework except DESN 793 Proseminar in Integrated  Design and DESN 797 Integrated Design Thesis
  • a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Mission Statement

The Master of Fine Arts in Integrated Design offers innovative graduate study in graphic and media design, a profession that demands constant reinvention. The program curriculum provides a theoretical and conceptual base while it develops students' practical and technological skills to design across a broad range of media, including print, video and digital platforms. It enhances their ability to maintain currency in those skills and prepares them for lifelong practice. The MFA degree offers graduates opportunities for professional advancement and for teaching at the university level.
