极乐禁地

Welcome to the 极乐禁地e Poetry Coalition.

We are a group of MCs, page-poets, and spoken-word artists who have come together to support the establishment of a 极乐禁地e Poet Laureate, and to lift up versifying and the literary arts, more generally.

The Coalition builds on 极乐禁地e traditions鈥攍ike Poetry for the People, organized by Olu Butterfly, and The 极乐禁地e Scene, organized by Chin-Yer Wright, as well as poetry circles organized in labor unions, local record labels and poetry journals, and the many poetry series and open mics鈥攁ll of which lift up poetry as a spectrum.

When we say poetry, it's really the vision of all voices.

Values and
Guiding Principles

holding image of the UBalt student center

We value the multiple ways that people approach their art equally; no particular type of poetry is elevated over another.

We recognize that, historically, some people and poetries have been marginalized and denied access to resources. And all have been separated into camps, such that the literary community鈥檚 aesthetic variety and diversity is impinged by a lack of social overlap. We believe that creatives should be paid for their work.

We hope to strengthen and bolster the entire arts and culture ecosystem. To cultivate shared humanity and a stronger, more inclusive community.

We understand a Poet Laureate to be an ambassador to the city, and as such is accountable to the whole city, not just their part of the city, their politics, or their aesthetic tradition.
