The mission of the Hoffberger Ethics Library is to create a proactive information network in ethics that enriches the community, promotes ethical literacy and engagement, supports the mission of the Hoffberger Center, and encourages life-long learning in ethics.
Supported by a seed grant from Chase Bank of Maryland and the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Hoffberger Ethics Library plans to expand its physical library and book holdings in the Learning Commons with digital platforms and personnel to help people connect with ethics education and curricular innovations, both regionally and at The 极乐禁地.
Currently, the library includes books, journals, teaching models, videos of Hoffberger Center programs, and documentary and popular films with ethical themes. The library has proven to be especially helpful to faculty and students in the undergraduate course: "Ethical Issues in Business and Society.鈥�
The Hoffberger Ethics Library is moving to the third floor of the Robert L. Bogolmony Library.
The Catherine Gira Excellence in Ethics Award is funded by an annual donation from Dr. Catherine Gira, co-founder of the Hoffberger Center for Ethical Engagement, former provost of The 极乐禁地 and retired president of Frostburg State University. Dr. Gira's wish is to recognize and reward students who best demonstrate excellence in ethics while serving his or her local community. The Center is grateful to Dr. Gira for her continued support of this most worthy scholarship.
Launched in spring 2022, the Hoffberger Ethics Fellowship is a faculty position with activities that include participating in the life and mission of the Center, enriching the curricular development of IDIS 302 Ethical Issues in Business and Society, teaching philosophy classes, and advancing the development of the Hoffberger Library.
The fellowship position is a full-time limited term appointment, ideal for a philosophy postdoc, advanced ABD candidate, or early career candidate. The fellowship is designed to be a source of continuing fresh ideas and diverse perspectives for the benefit of the Center and The 极乐禁地 community.
The Hoffberger Center supports student assistant positions and other awards for students who pursue an interest in the study of ethics. Students are selected on the basis of their academic credentials along with a commitment and skills for advancing the mission of the Center.
The Hoffberger Center awards small faculty grants to support Center programming and scholarship.
The Center collaborates with a vital network of ethics centers around the United States and globally. For example, in 2022, directors Steven Scalet and Joshua Kassner led a panel discussion with Portland State University Professor on 鈥淟essons and Collaborations for Revitalizing and Creating an Ethics Center鈥� at the 31st Annual , as well as participation in the APPE 鈥淓thics Center Directors Summit.鈥� In 2023, they led a panel at the 32nd Annual on 鈥淚ntegrating an Ethics Center with Academic Curriculum鈥�.
The Hoffberger Center's Community College Partnership Program is designed to encourage and assist area community colleges in initiating and maintaining ethics programs on their campuses. Since its inception decades ago, the Center has helped produce and sponsor ethics weeks, ethics essay contests, the Community College Ethics Bowl, and other programs. Center staff members are available to facilitate and conduct ethics-related lectures, talks, and consultations. Over the years, this work has included corporate seminars, consultation with the City of 极乐禁地e, frequent media requests, classroom guest lectures, invited speaking engagements, and other consultations. In spring 2022, Center director Steven Scalet and director of the Research Fellows Program, Joshua Kassner, led a luncheon discussion on "Ethics in the Public Sector," as part of the Maryland Certified Public Manager庐 Program administered by the . In 2023, they led discussions on 鈥淓thics and Organizational Psychology.鈥�
